Podcast Advertising vs Other Channels: CPA Compared
Display ads cost almost nothing per thousand impressions. Podcast ads cost more. And yet advertisers keep moving budget into podcasts. The reason comes down to one number that CPM will never tell you: cost per acquisition.
Podcast advertising cost per acquisition only makes sense when you stack it against what you actually get: listeners who act, recall, and buy at rates that most channels cannot match. This post puts the real benchmarks side by side so you can make the comparison with actual data.
Why CPM Comparisons Miss the Point
A Google Display Network impression costs around $3 CPM. A podcast mid-roll host-read ad runs $24 to $26 CPM on average, according to industry benchmarks. On paper, display looks eight times cheaper.
But CPM measures delivery, not outcome. The question that matters for your budget is how many of those impressions turn into customers, and at what total cost.
A channel with a $3 CPM and a 0.01% conversion rate is expensive to acquire a customer. A channel with a $25 CPM and a 2% conversion rate can be one of the cheapest sources of new customers you have. Podcast advertising is consistently closer to the second scenario.
How Conversion Rates Compare
Here is the clearest evidence of the gap.
46% of weekly listeners purchased directly after hearing an ad, according to Edison Research’s 2024 Podcast Consumer report. That is not a brand lift stat. That is a purchase.
For context, average display ad click-through rates hover around 0.1% across Google’s network. Email marketing, widely considered a high-converting channel, typically delivers conversion rates of 1% to 5% on clicks, not on total reach. Podcast ads are working on a fundamentally different audience posture.
A 2024 study by Acast, conducted with Edison Research across 1,031 U.S. respondents, found that 88% of podcast listeners took some form of action after hearing a podcast ad. Among daily listeners, that figure rose to 92%. Within that group, 44% made a purchase and 57% visited the brand’s website.
Those are not numbers you find in display or social benchmarks.
ROAS: Podcasts vs Social vs Radio
The direct comparison most media planners want is return on ad spend across channels. A 2024 study from Acast, OMD, and Annalect analyzed over 2 billion Swedish krona in total ad spend across 32 advertisers in six industries and broke out short-term ROAS by channel.
Podcasts delivered a 4.2x short-term ROAS versus 3.6x for social media and 3.5x for radio in that analysis. On a long-term ROI basis, the gap widened: podcasts reached 4.9x versus 3.7x for average media across all channels measured.
The same study found that podcast ads were 34% more cost-effective at driving brand awareness than average media. And adding podcasts to an existing TV plus online video mix increased short-term ROAS by up to 18%.
These are not anecdotal results. They come from a controlled multi-year analysis across actual ad spend data.
The Brand Recall Advantage and What It Does to CPA
Cost per acquisition is not only shaped by immediate conversion. Delayed purchases, word-of-mouth, and repeat buyers all trace back to how well a channel implants the brand in memory. This is where podcast advertising holds a structural advantage over display in particular.
A Nielsen study commissioned by Midroll Media, covering 11 effectiveness studies with 7,100 total respondents, found that podcast advertising generates up to 4.4x better brand recall than display ads on other digital platforms. The same research documented a 10% lift in purchase intent: 61% of ad-exposed listeners said they were likely to buy the advertised product versus 56% in the control group.
Separately, a MAGNA Global and Nielsen meta-analysis of 610 brand impact studies with 147,525 respondents found a 79% brand recall rate among podcast listeners, representing a 15-point lift over unexposed controls, alongside a 5% overall lift in purchase intent.
High recall means fewer impressions needed before a listener converts. Fewer impressions at $25 CPM beats many more impressions at $3 CPM when you run the full cost-per-converted-customer math.
Host-read ads push this even further. Nielsen’s 2020 analysis of 260-plus surveys across 240 brands found that host-read podcast ads produce a 50% increase in purchase and recommendation intent compared to non-host-read formats. The format is the mechanism: a trusted voice making a genuine recommendation triggers a different cognitive response than a banner or a pre-roll most users skip.
What Podscribe’s Attribution Data Shows
Real conversion benchmarks for podcast advertising became clearer as pixel-based attribution improved. Podscribe’s Q2 2025 Performance Benchmark Report, covering over 67,000 campaigns and 270-plus advertisers, found the following for direct show-specific buys: a 0.31% visitor rate and a 0.022% purchase rate.
Those numbers look modest in isolation, but they reflect a full-funnel measurement across a wide range of advertisers and categories, including those with very long consideration cycles. For brands in categories where the average online display purchase rate is a fraction of a percent, these figures are competitive. And for retargeting campaigns (reaching prior website visitors through podcast ads), Podscribe found 7.4x higher visitor rates and 5.5x higher purchase rates than standard podcast campaigns.
The same report found that 45% of all podcast ad conversions happen within the first seven days of ad exposure, giving media planners a clear attribution window to work with.
How to Compare CPA Across Channels Accurately
Podcast advertising CPA calculations require one adjustment most planners skip: accounting for delayed conversion. Listeners often hear an ad during a commute or workout and act later, sometimes days later. Promo codes and vanity URLs capture only a fraction of that behavior. Pixel-based attribution and post-purchase surveys are necessary to close the measurement gap.
Nielsen’s 2023 analysis noted that only 49% of marketers expressed high confidence measuring podcast advertising ROI, the lowest confidence level across digital channels. That measurement gap has historically made podcast CPA look worse than it is because undercounted conversions inflate the apparent cost.
When you apply better measurement tools, the math changes. Podscribe’s data shows that pixel-based attribution captures 2.3x more conversions than post-purchase surveys and 4.6x more than promo codes alone. Brands using only promo codes to measure podcast advertising are likely seeing a CPA that is two to four times higher than the real number.
A Direct Answer on Podcast Advertising CPA
Is podcast advertising cost per acquisition competitive with other channels? Yes, for most brands targeting engaged, high-intent audiences. Podcast listeners convert at higher rates than display and comparable rates to paid social, while delivering better brand recall and purchase intent. Higher CPMs are offset by better outcomes. The channel becomes most efficient when measurement goes beyond promo codes.
Where Podcast Advertising Fits in Your Media Mix
Podcast advertising performs best when it is not isolated. The Acast/OMD/Annalect study showed an 18% ROAS lift when podcasts were added to a TV and online video mix, not when they replaced it.
The strategic case is straightforward. Use podcast advertising to reach the audiences your other channels miss: the cord-cutters who have left linear TV, the high-income professionals who scroll past display without registering it, and the engaged niche communities where a trusted host recommendation carries weight that a banner never will. Let your other channels handle the retargeting and the long tail. Let podcasts do the work of earning attention in the first place.
