Video Podcast Advertising: A Brand Guide for 2026

Video podcasts have gone from experiment to mainstream faster than most ad buyers expected. More than half of Americans have now watched a video podcast, and YouTube is where most of them go to do it. That growth has opened a genuinely new advertising channel for brands, but it comes with a catch: the performance data for video podcast advertising is more nuanced than the audience numbers suggest.

Here is what every brand needs to know before committing budget to this fast-moving format.

The Video Podcast Boom in Numbers

Video podcast adoption is not a fringe phenomenon. Edison Research found that 51% of Americans 12 and older have watched a video podcast, according to a 2026 industry summary. YouTube has passed 1 billion monthly podcast viewers globally.

Platform preference has shifted sharply. According to the Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights Fall 2025 Podcast Download Report, 42% of podcast consumers now name YouTube as their primary podcast platform, up from just 15% in 2019. Spotify has followed: more than 60% of Spotify’s most popular shows offer a video version of each episode.

For brands, the question is no longer whether to consider video podcasts. It is how to buy into them, and what to expect from the investment.

How to Buy Ads on Video Podcasts

Video podcast advertising is not one thing. Brands have several distinct paths into the format.

YouTube’s Top Podcasts lineup. In March 2026, YouTube launched its “Top Podcasts” lineup through YouTube Select, giving advertisers access to curated packages of leading shows organized by category, according to reporting by Tubefilter. Dynamic ad insertion, available on YouTube since 2025, lets brands serve ads into podcast content programmatically, much like traditional digital display. This is the most scalable entry point for brands new to video podcasting.

Direct host-read sponsorships. As with audio, brands can partner directly with video podcast hosts for personal endorsements. These deals happen outside YouTube’s ad platform and typically involve the host reading copy on camera. They cost more and require more negotiation, but they carry the full weight of the host’s trust with the audience.

Programmatic through networks. Larger podcast networks sell video inventory programmatically through connected TV and streaming audio pipes. This is the most scalable option but delivers the least host relationship benefit.

Video vs. Audio: What the Performance Data Says

The most important study on this question came out in December 2025, when Oxford Road and Podscribe published their “Re-Thinking YouTube” white paper. They analyzed promo code redemptions and survey responses across more than 1,000 campaigns and 100 brands, comparing how audio downloads and YouTube views drove actual purchases from the same shows.

The finding was direct. YouTube video impressions were 18% less efficient at driving survey responses and 25% less effective at generating promo code conversions than audio downloads from the same podcasts.

The explanation the authors offer is practical: audio podcast listeners actively seek out the shows they love, often as a daily ritual. YouTube audiences are more likely to arrive through algorithmic discovery rather than intent. That loyalty gap shows up in the conversion data.

This does not mean video is the wrong channel. It means brands need to match their goals to the format. The Oxford Road study compared all video impressions to audio downloads, which includes a large pool of programmatic video inventory with no host relationship. When brands negotiate direct host-read sponsorships on video podcasts, the trust dynamic more closely mirrors audio host-reads.

Response Rates by Ad Format

Regardless of platform, the ad format with the consistently highest response rate is host-read. Magellan AI’s Q1 2026 Podcast Measurement Benchmark tracked response rates across formats.

Host-read2.45%
Programmatic1.93%
Produced non-host-read1.51%

Host-read ads average a 2.45% response rate, compared with 1.93% for programmatic and 1.51% for produced non-host-read spots. That gap holds whether the episode lives on audio or video. The host relationship, not the screen, drives the result.

When Video Podcast Advertising Makes Sense

Given what the data shows, video podcast advertising has a clear sweet spot.

Brand awareness is where video wins. Video is a richer environment for building brand imagery, product context, and emotional association. Podcast campaigns already outperform most channels on brand lift: Nielsen’s Podcasting Today 2025 report found that podcast ads generate an average 10-point lift in brand awareness and a 6-point lift in purchase intent.

Brand awareness now accounts for 55% of all US podcast ad spend in Q1 2026, according to Magellan AI, up from 51% in Q1 2025. Advertisers are increasingly using podcasts for top-of-funnel brand building rather than pure direct response. Video amplifies that effect.

Reaching new audiences. YouTube’s recommendation engine introduces podcast content to people who would never search for a show directly. For brands in consumer technology, lifestyle, or entertainment, that algorithmic reach can bring in audiences beyond the core loyal listener base.

Connected TV retargeting. YouTube’s ad platform lets brands retarget audiences who watched a podcast episode with follow-up video ads across the connected TV ecosystem. Audio podcast advertising does not offer that retargeting path. For brands running full-funnel campaigns, that downstream retargeting capability adds real value.

Product categories that benefit from visual context. Consumer hardware, fashion, food and beverage, and beauty brands gain something meaningful when the host can hold the product on camera. That is a channel advantage audio alone cannot replicate.

What to Do If You Are Starting Now

US podcast ad spend rose 28% year over year in Q1 2026, reaching an all-time high. Video podcasts are a growing slice of that market, but the majority of podcast advertising still happens in audio. The smartest approach for most brands is to lead with audio host-reads to establish the conversion baseline, then test video placements for brand lift and audience extension.

Start with the host relationship. A trusted host-read on a show your buyers already love, whether they hear it or watch it, will consistently outperform a programmatic video buy in front of an algorithmically assembled audience.
